THE 3NT RESPONSE TO A MINOR OPENING
Opener Responder
1C/1D 3NT
The requirements are:
-- 16-18 HCP, balanced hand, 4-3-3-3 distribution
-- No biddable major suit (Q10xx or better)
-- Strength in the unbid suits
To ask for aces after the 3NT response, opener bids the lowest
unbid suit other than clubs (see SUPER GERBER in the book "Strong
Bidding"):
Opener Responder
1C 3NT
4C - natural rebid of clubs
4D - Super Gerber
4H/4S - natural, forcing
4NT - natural raise
Opener Responder
1D 3NT
4C/4D - natural bid
4H - Super Gerber
4S - natural, forcing
The Omnibus 2NT response is used with 5-3-3-2 and 4-4-3-2 notrump
hands of this strength, when playing that convention. Otherwise,
it is permissible to bid 3NT with these hands too. See chapter
OMNIBUS in the book "Marvin's Conventions and Treatments."
When the Opponents Intervene
-- When RHO overcalls at the one level, there is no change in the
meaning of responses:
South West North
1C 1D/1H/1S 2NT - forcing
3NT - 16-18 HCP
4NT - RKCB
With a 19-20 HCP hand, bid 2NT, then 4NT.
-- When an overcall is at the two level, a necessarily non-jump 2NT
response is not forcing, showing 11-12 HCP.
If negative doubles are in use, the 3NT bid still shows 16-18 HCP,
but responder's distribution need not be 4-3-3-3. With 13-15 HCP,
double negatively and bid 3NT on the next round. A 4NT response
(not Blackwood after a minor suit opening and a two-level overcall)
shows 19-20 HCP.
If negative doubles are not in use, the single jump 3NT response
shows 13-17 HCP, a 4NT response shows 18-20 HCP.
-- When an overcall is at the three level, a 3NT response shows
13-17 HCP, a 4NT response shows 18-20 HCP.
